Earthquakes and Fallen Books

FALLEN BOOKS BY MELISSA DUBBIN + AARON DAVIDSON

Did you feel that earthquake last Wednesday? I was at Hennessey and Ingalls and the shelves shook for a second. The rumbling stopped as quickly as it started, but it was a quake for sure. Centered in Palm Desert, its 5.4 Richter magnitude was felt as far as Vegas. As I straightened up a couple of crooked books, I remembered a project I read about in Cabinet Magazine last year. Artists Melissa Dubbin and Aaron Davidson's Fallen Books photos look like the opening Ghostbusters scene in the New York Public Library. Their photographs of toppled books are evidence that something strange has happened.

Dubbin and Davidson collected photographs of library interiors after earthquakes, many taken by librarians aiming to describe the disaster.  The artists then rated the photos against the Mercalli Scale. It's is an alternative to the Richter, but instead of measuring seismic energy, it uses color-coding and a I - XII to rate an earthquake's destructive effect on humans and objects.

So, the earthquake I felt Wednesday might be labeled grey I. Instrumental - not felt except by a very few under especially favorable conditions while this 1990 photo of the Claremont Colleges Honnold Mudd Library in Upland, CA is called green VI. Strong - Felt by all. Windows, dishes, glassware broken; books fall off shelves; some heavy furniture moved or overturned...

CRYBABY Presents at Space 15 Twenty: "Do Not Remove" Opening Event

CRYBABY Presents at Space 15 Twenty

“Do Not Remove” Opening Event

February 4th, 2012, 7:00pm-10:00pm

On February 4th 2012, CRYBABY Presents is excited to announce their move from 171 S. La Brea to their new temporary installation space at Space 15Twenty.

Their upcoming show, “Do Not Remove,” will open on the evening of Saturday, February 4th, in conjunction with the White Iris Records Music Series. The opening night of “Do Not Remove” will include a special guest performance by a local Los Angeles based band and DJ set by Sean Bowie of Teams.

CRYBABY Presents’ third show, “Do Not Remove” (February 4th- March 29th, 2012) will debut an exhibition featuring work by CRYBABY founders Dakota Solt and Lisa Ziven. Together the girls push the fine art element of a commercial object through processing and reinventing unconventional subject matters into salable and usable pieces of art.

In “Do Not Remove” Dakota Solt’s prints of digital collages play with the re-appropriation of imagery and slogans by altering the physical nature of an object, while Lisa Ziven’s selection of sculptural pillows and soft goods continue this conversation as three-dimensional representations of Solt’s prints.

“Do Not Remove” will also include a curated installation of home products by Molla Space and The Evolution Store, accessories by Surface to Air, Minimarket, Illesteva, Hansel from Basel and Baggu, as well as jewelry by Upper Metal Class and Etten Eller. The installation will also include CRYBABY Presents original clothing designs and accessories, BLK DNM, Samantha Pleet and Something Else.

In addition to the pop-up store, CRYBABY will host a White Iris Records music series starting on the opening night, February 4th with February 18th, and March 3rd concerts to follow. The series will include performances by local bands, a special DJ set, drinks, and late night shopping. CRYBABY Presents will also be featuring background studio visits with the bands on their site at www.crybabypresents.com.

CRYBABY Presents is a revolving concept shop that will continue to pop up in different spaces. Their first shop on La Brea Ave. featured two art and design installations entitled “Holy Smoke” (October 15th-December 1st) and “TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE” (December 10th-January 26th). Their current space will be at Space 15Twenty for the months of February and March.
