Neubau Welt
Record Makers, responsible for the super French, super psychedelic graphic designs of musicians like Air and Sebastian Tellier, are celebrating their 10th Anniversary. Their opening this week at the Gallery Space reminded me of the allure and beauty of graphics.
Feeling inspired, today I picked up the 2005 Neubau Welt book and CD by Berlin-based designer Stefan Gandl and his team, Neubau. Neubau Welt shares thousands of editable silhouette illustrations dealing with the everyday object. "The subjects are taken from the physical and mental surroundings of the Neubau office," they explain. A simple idea, but these vector graphics are anything but clip-art. They're sleek shapes with a highly-detailed German touch. Because they are vector graphics and not clip-art, they can be manipulated into original form and design. The encyclopedia's graphic subjects are broken down by an index of 26 categories ranging from Tools, Chairs, and Playground to Insects, Mushrooms and Trees. With the book, designers buy the right to use the graphics and Neubau typefaces in their own work. Though five years old now, the collection feels fresh; a great starting point of inspiration.
In 2001 designer Stefan Gandl also created the book dDsos1: The User's Manual, which has since become a collectors' item. Gandl works in freelance design in Berlin. Check out his portfolio No Future to see and learn more.
