I ended my Euro excursions in the beautiful quaint cities in the South of France. I first stopped in Nice where I went to open air markets stocked full of spices, heavenly fresh baked goods, delicious smelling fruit, lavender in every form and of course, cheese and bread. The shopping was no doubt mind blowing, as well as the hundreds of buttery flaky croissants I consumed.

I wish this is how I retrieved spices for cooking.


This is the view of Monte Carlo from Monaco. I went to a beautiful aquarium and had the best chocolate crepe in a little hole in the wall cafe.

READ IT OVER COFFEE LIKE THE MORNING NEWS 

This week I picked up Creamier and it is delectable. Ten curators from four continents compiled a selection of 100 emerging artists for examination and discussion. The hybrid portfolio meets newspaper is Phaidon's fourth volume in its Cream, Contemporary Art in Culture series. The project was started back in '98 with Cream, followed by Fresh Cream (2000), Cream 3 (2003) and Ice-Cream (2007).  

Creamier is state-of-the-art in all forms. With an emphasis on exhibiting new artists to the world, it's loose-leaf, over-sized newspaper design fits neatly inside its portfolio slip-case. Its layout (more like a copy of the Financial Times than an art book) is formatted with bold headlines, narrow columns and captioned photos. Content is "state-of-the-art" too- the opening article features discussion between the curators regarding art-making and the art-market in today's struggling global economy. 

The selected 100 are an international Motley Crue of installation and performance artists, photographers, painters and sculptors. They're not all winners, but many of the features do present exciting and interesting work. Captions like poetic brutality, magnetic semi-constructivist coolness, and documentary tradition...drifting in space placed next to discussion and saturated color photos leaves me feeling optimistic about the future of art.

Inspired to pursue photography by Antonioni's Blow-Up, street photographer Bruce Gilden has a history of fascinating and far-ranging projects -- previous subjects include New Orleans during Mardi Gras, voodoo rituals in Haiti, the horseracing craze in rural Ireland, and the seedy underbelly of Japan.

Gilden’s first series, shot from the late '60s until 1986, focused on New York beach Coney Island and all its intransigent glory.  Reminiscent of work by photo giants Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand, Gilden's black-and-white photographs candidly capture the beach bodies' grotesque tans and sagging flesh, aptly rendering the boardwalk's vaudevillian characters.
 




Gilden's photographs of Coney Island are currently on view at NYC's Amador Gallery until August 20.  For more of his work, visit the show's image gallery and his portfolio at Magnum Photos.
