doily's internet pickins: interview overview

YOU HAVE BEEN HERE SOMETIME

You Have Been Here Sometime is an artful look into the mind of L.A.-based designer David John.  Using typography to add personal emphasis, John spotlights consistently inspiring works of interest, as well as his engaging dialogues with designers, artists, and factotums.  To browse the site feels a bit like a going on a thoughtful tour of the internet's ever-reaching interiors -- take a look.

TEENAGE FILM BLOG

Based on Jon Savage's history of youth culture, Teenage is an in-progress and highly promising documentary about teens of yore, dating back to the early 20th century.  The accompanying blog, edited by Kelly Rakowski, is a treasure trove of all that is totally teen, taking the form of a fanzine and featuring revealing, "dear diary"-esque guest posts of personal photos and soundtracks.  Visit the blog and if you're in New York, check out their screening this Friday at the Anthology Film Archives for the film festival Migrating Forms.

THE MAKERS PROJECT

For The Makers Project, Brooklyn-based photographer Jennifer Causey documents and interviews area artisans as they engage in their tactile fields of work.  Among the vivid profiles featured so far are the coffee enthusiasts of Blue Bottle, the chandelier makers of Pelle Designs, and most recently the designer of charming label Wiksten.  Meet all of the 16 makers currently on the site and for updates on new additions, follow The Makers Project on Twitter.

Input : Output 'The Analog Workshop'

Space 15 Twenty is pleased to present Input : Output, a custom audio and curated lifestyle pop-up shop. Inspired by a love of industrial design and analog equipment, the shop will premiere handmade audio components designed by musician / furniture designer Philip Sumner and Kevin Carney, founder of The Generic Man and Mohawk General Store. "The idea is to have a workshop where Philip and I will test, audition, and create retro-styled speakers and tube amps," says Carney. "While wearing white lab coats, of course."

Hitting it off in the vintage audio section of Carney's store, the two immediately imagined creating their own line of products. "Philip has a wood shop and we both have collections of classic audio equipment, so we decided to give it a go," Carney says. "I kept looking for a space to do a sound installation for the public to experience, and here we are...doing it!" For 45 days, the two will experiment developing prototypes in a fishbowl-type workshop open to onlookers who can place custom orders. "We already have some designs completed, like a full range paper cone 3" driver in a wood enclosure," says Carney. "But the main reason for using this space is to come up with more ideas."

To create a living landscape for the sound, the space houses furniture from Amsterdam Modern, lamps from Niche Modern, and will host music events programmed by Sumner and Carney. "There will be in-store performances featuring bands and DJs the way they were meant to be heard, through analog equipment," says Carney. The entire project will also be photographed by Ramon Felix, and published into a book that will be designed by Ill Studio in Paris.

Input : Output's grand opening will be this Friday, May 20, from 7-11pm. The event will feature musical selections from special guests David Holmes, Eddie Ruscha, Eug, and Nitedog.

What's Happening: ROLU Furniture at Mondo Cane

This just in:  Minneapolis-based studio ROLU will be exhibiting their super-rad minimalist furniture at Mondo Cane!

Stop by the TriBeCa store on Saturday from 6-9pm for an opening reception.  If you're at MoMA PS1 for the NY Art Book Fair this weekend, you can also catch the furniture on display at the IFS LTD booth.

The exhibition will be up until December 4, but if you can't make it, you can still get a piece of the action at the studio's consistently awesome blog.

stop here if you're on the hunt

With the debut of Urban Outfitters' mid-century inspired furniture and our recent posts on apartment therapy (tributing our current pop-up, Essentials Shop), I'm excited to share a few of my favorite furniture-hunting spots on L.A.'s east side.  Check into the higher end shops for ideas, inspiration and the occasional impulse purchase. Thrift stores demand a little digging and a lot of patience, but when you find that treasured cold-war era lamp or Saarinen-like kitchen table for a bargain, the satisfaction is priceless.

FROM EAST TO WEST:

I love making an afternoon out of St. Vincent de Paul and Revival in Lincoln Heights. The legendary, warehouse-sized St. Vincent's is a must stop thrift shop. It's crowded with old, musty furniture, but treasures are abound. I never know what I will find- last week I got excited about the rows of antique movie theater chairs for sale.

Revival is just across the street. It's a tiny shop run by two sisters who restore and resell found furniture at modest prices. Vintage accessories, magazines, books and jewelry are also featured here. Where St. Vincent's is a hit or miss, I usually see something I love at Revival. Most recently it was a mid-century record player console.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

REVIVAL

In Silver Lake, Duson, Mohawk General Store and OK are on my list. Along with its modern furniture, Duson features one-of redesigned antiques into functional pieces, think 1950's elementary school locker turned dresser and antique store-front signage turned wall art.

Playing on the idea of a supply store for the east Angelino, Mohawk General Store is my favorite stop. It's move last month from Echo Park to the main Sunset drag in Silver Lake has opened room to feature a woody, modern collection of new Dutch-inspired furniture, lighting and art.

And OK is the place for eclectic, modern housewares and art. Think sherbet-colored bowl chairs and architect's desk lamps, great art design books too.

FOUND IT FOR MY HOUSE:

SUPER 70s PAINTING + DAISY HOOKS FROM THE GREAT QUALITY THRIFT, POMONA, CA

YARD SALE FINDS: A 50's METAL LOCKER AND LAMP

Still can't find just what you're looking for? Cruise around early Saturday mornings and hit up local yard sales. New to the neighborhood is the monthly Dodger Stadium flea market, and of course, the monthly Rose Bowl flea market never disappoints.

HAPPY HUNTING.

Apartment Therapy

The image above is a little projection of my ideal apartment. Personally having an eclectic feel to your home makes it look more worldly and appealing not only for your guests but for yourself. Couches that seem to resemble a blank canvas are ideal because they can be adorned with colorful pillows that brighten your most lived-in room. Having the bed covered with alluring linens is something to look forward to at the end of the day. Fresh flowers in vases liven up the home and the art collection hung above your space of creativity will keep your mind constantly brewing with new ideas. For now, I can only keep rip-outs and files of all my favorite styles and what-not as a collection for my apartment in the near future.

Check out my archived apartment collages.

Remember, Essentials Shop Pop-Up opens tonight from 7-10.

For Your Consideration: Mid-Century Inspired Furniture

Who isn't a big fan of mid-century modern?

I'm thrilled that Urban Outfitters is now carrying their own mid-century inspired furniture pieces that don't neglect this style of design's form, functionality and quality. I like the bold Rocker Chair and the Ad Hoc Bookcase. Both are great together or as singular entities. Have a look at the other standout pieces exclusively designed by UO.

Some iconic mid-century modern photos we're particularly fond of --
