Three Tall Men: Paul Gellman
Paul Gellman of Gallery Space's Three Tall Men disrupts a stereotype of what art by a tall artist might look like. The collaged displays by the 6'6" self proclaimed "gentle giant" are painstakingly detailed. Pedestals, urns and canvases are covered with small cut-outs and found objects. The collection of pieces comes together to create a classical shrine celebrating everything that's wrong with America- carefully selected magazine and newspaper images are representational of an over-saturated consumer culture. Porn stars and cartoon characters and Greek statues, Macaulay Culkin's mug shot, Paris Hilton and "PRESIDENT NIXON" are all side by side. All this is accompanied by human-sized Styrofoam lollipops, canvases decorated with fringes and patches, and a treasure chest of strange keepsakes.
Gellman's obsession with the miniature matched with his hand-crafted, child-like take on art making is theatrical and unexpectedly larger than life.
Paul Gellman has shown work in Los Angeles, New York, St. Lois and Dresden, Germany. He holds a BFA from Cooper Union and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.
